After buying your new PC or tablet, we know you can't wait to get it up and running. If you’re new to Lenovo or are getting used to a new device and the Windows 8.1 operating system, follow these 10 steps for a seamless experience.
Everything listed below can also be done directly through the Lenovo Companion app, which is preloaded on all Lenovo Windows 8.1 devices, so be sure to go there first!
1. Get to Know Your New PC
Lenovo Companion will be your go-to app for everything related to your new device. You’ll find your system’s user guide, warranty status, accessories, plus dozens of helpful articles on everything from learning Windows 8.1 to squeezing more hours from your battery.
You’ll also find information about the modern apps preloaded on your system to make the things you do every day faster, easier and more enjoyable. So before you head over to the Windows Store, explore the apps that are preloaded on your device and check out the Lenovo-developed innovation apps.
2. Become Familiar with Windows 8.1
Whether you’re new to Windows 8.1 or need a few refreshers, getting to know your operating system will help ensure you’re enjoying all of your system’s best features. Learn how to set up automatic app updates, import your email and more on our Windows 8.1 Support pages. You'll also find additional Windows 8.1 guides in Lenovo Companion.
3. Customize Settings
Do you need to change your PC’s date and time? Add a user? Make fonts bigger and easier to read? You can customize all of this and more in PC Settings. Simply swipe in from the right edge of your screen and go to Settings, then Change PC settings. From here, you can:
- Adjust screen resolution (which modifies font size)
- Turn your webcam on or off
- Adjust sound
- Enable (or disable) edge swipes
- Adjust your mouse settings
- Change your battery power plan
Be sure to Register Your Device. Registering with Lenovo takes seconds and will ensure you receive:
- The latest updates and downloads
- Critical product support and upgrades
- Quick, secure access to your purchase history for warranty validation or insurance claims
- Alerts on product recalls, safety concerns and other important issues
- System-specific tips and exclusive offers
You'll also be able to register your device directly from Companion in the My System section.
5. Secure Your System
Your system comes preloaded with a trial version of Symantec® or McAfee®, but you’ll need to take a few steps to give your PC the ultimate protection it needs. Learn how to choose and set up the right anti-virus software so it will run effortlessly in the background and give you peace of mind when exploring online.
6. Migrate Data from Your Old PC
We’ve made it easier than ever to move all of your digital files from an old PC over to a new one. Follow this migration guide so you can pick up right where you left off.
7. Connect Bluetooth Devices
Learn how to "pair" Bluetooth-enabled devices like speakers and printers to your Lenovo device—it's easier than you may think!
8. Accessorize Your System
In the Companion app, you'll be able to find accessories made for your specific device, whether that means Bluetooth speakers for high-quality sound on the go, a wireless keyboard and mouse or stylish backpack. We make it easy for you to find the perfect accessory to complement your new device. And you'll also be able to check out our the Top 10 Most Popular Accessories provided by our Lenovo Accessories Team.
9. Protect Your System
What happens if you accidentally drop or spill something on your system? Purchase Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) and you won’t have to worry – just be sure to do it soon. ADP is a special upgrade that’s available only within 90 days after your system purchase.
