James Bond Upgrades Security Tool with USB 3.0 Secure Hard Drive

USB 3.0 Secure Hard Drive

New ThinkPad 500GB & 750GB USB 3.0 Secure Hard Drive Offers More Storage & Faster Data Transfer

Mark Cadiz manages Lenovo’s options, helping customers get the most value out of their PCs by leveraging a full portfolio of devices. His previous product, the USB 2.0 Secure Hard Drive, has become a customer favorite for its simplicity, security and cool factor. In this post, he debuts the new and improved USB 3.0 Secure Hard Drive.

Companies today are concerned about how to secure mobile storage devices, especially since the ramifications of losing a portable hard drive with sensitive or personal customer information are damaging from a legal, financial (think about Sarbanes-Oxley or HIPAA) and reputational standpoint. We created the original USB 2.0 Secure Hard Drive to make information-sharing within a corporation easy, yet highly secure. The Secure HDD has been crucial for government, health care, insurance companies, financial institutions, HR departments and executives with sensitive data. Today, we’re upgrading this James Bondish tool to one with larger storage and faster USB 3.0 data transfer with the USB 3.0 Secure Hard Drive.

While easy to use, first and foremost, we wanted to make sure it maintains the highest levels of security by:

  • Incorporating a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) certified 256-bit AES hardware encryption algorithm
  • Including a standard SATA 2.5” hard drive housed in an enclosure that includes the user interface, encryption circuitry, integrated USB cable and shock mounting
  • Formatting with a single encrypted partition for seamless on-the-fly encryption to keep data safe and protected even if the hard drive is removed from its enclosure
  • Allowing for up to 10 pin numbers/10 users to access the device

The first way I describe this product is Security. Simplicity is the second way. In the new version, we added alphabet letters to the numeric keypad so users can easily insert their pin to unlock the hard drive and access the encrypted data. You can use the secure hard drive anywhere - it’s compatible with virtually any USB equipped device and operating system, has no software to install and uses very little power. It’s designed to be rugged with shock absorption system, and its USB cable tucks up nicely into the shape for a clean design. So whether you’re protecting customer data, trade secrets, or your invaluable photos and personal data, the USB 3.0 Secure Hard Drive is the right choice to keep your information safe and accessible to those you want to share it with. The 750GB secure hard drive will be available starting later today on www.lenovo.com for $199.
